Firstly, I think for ships, instead of the base speed being added to the engine speed, it should be multiplied, so small ships get a much higher speed bonus over large ships. Right now small ships have no advantages really, expecialy as large ships are much cheaper now.
This would make it much easier to attack didtant targets using smaller ships, although these are not so poweful.
Also, a weapon like EMP from DQE would be good, or several. It would alow you to attack fleets at a distance, although attacks weaken over distance.

| Yes, ship speed should be balanced a bit. But I dont think it should be multiplied. Difference between small and big classes would be very big. We will do some calculations and measurements and befor next round will change engines speed and ship speed bonuses.
On a side note don't forget about jump gates. It will allow you to jump to another star in 1 turn if there is a friendly jump gate. We think also to decrease travel time in half if there is no jump gate at destination system, but this is not decided yet.
