Ok, as I posted in the bugs reports forum, I think I have calculated the best ships for each situation. If my calculations are correct, and later I will try and check, the best ships are the following filled with the weapons listed:
Close range Battle:
Corvette+Lazer turrets or Plasma Cannons, both are equal with 2 cost per damage.
Mid Range Battle:
Corvette+Ion Turrets with ~1.67 cost per damage.
Long Range Battle:
Corvette+Nuclear Torpedos with 1.8 cost per damage.
Overall best ship across all ranges:
Corvette+Ion turrets with an average of ~2.06 cost per damage.
So, its always corvettes that win. So maybe the build cost of ships needs to be changed, so the bigger ships can win some times. Not sure, to give a comparison, a Titan with Ion turrets has an overall average cost per damage of ~11.22 across all ranges. Thats more than 5 times the cost...
The worst possible average cost per damage comes from a Titan+Lazer turrets that costs ~12.15.
EDIT: I forgot about engines, obviously lots of small ships spend more space and money on engines, than a single large ship. So, that will increase the cost per space of small ships a bit.
Also, battle computers, they will be much more effective on large ships, so maybe these 2 things will even things out a bit, although I dont think the effect will be too much. I will try and work out with those also.

Also, don't forget that precision is calculated for each shot. I think that several corvettes without a battle computer will be less effective than a titan with a battle computer and same amount of weaponry.
Another part of your calculation should be building time. What will be faster to build several corvettes or few titans?

Yeah, thats true.
Build time isa bit of a problem, because you have spare production buiding up, and can only use 1...so corvettes, and frigates may loose out their, but cruisers seem to build 1 per turn on the best planets.
Also, the build up of resourcs is good on a planet. You can save up thousands of spare points and keep them for later, like if your attacked you could order titans each turn
