I think that later it may be good to add a new ship type like 'research vessel' or something. This could be very fast and automaticaly move from star to star and explore it for the owner, if you had several they would go separate ways and explore different areas.
The galaxy has over 1000 stars, sending ships manualy to all of them will take forever.
